DIMAPUR, JUN 6: What started off as a happy celebration ended in a sad tragedy and a volatile situation today after the vehicle of Parliamentary Secretary C Kipili Sangtam,
who was en-route to Kohima after attending the Road Show in Longleng, was involved in a major mishap near Longsa village, about 2 to 3 km away from Wokha town. A two wheeler is reported to have had a head-on collision with the parliamentary secretary’s vehicle at around 5 pm leading to the death of one person and injury to two others, one seriously. The deceased reportedly succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital. Following the accident, irate villagers stormed the road and blocked vehicular movement in an agitated state. Unconfirmed reports say that a Mahindra Scorpio was also burnt in the process. On the demand of the villagers for an immediate meeting at the spot of the accident, the district administration called for a meeting with the police, NGOs and other leaders at the Circuit House. However, details of the meeting outcome could not be ascertained as officials were on the ground trying to calm the situation. Earlier, there were reports of irate villagers gathering on the highway and calling for indefinite road closure along Longsa village. Reports Chief Secretary Lalthara, who was also heading back to the capital after attending the Longleng programme, was also held up by the agitated villagers and was reported to be at the Circuit House in Wokha. When contacted, police informed that the Parliamentary Secretary had accompanied the injured victims to the district hospital. They have reportedly been shifted to Kohima after first aid. Police also confirmed the tense situation in the area in the aftermath of the accident and termed it volatile. Reports late in the evening said huge mobs of villagers were continuing with their agitation. However, no details could be ascertained. The Deputy Commissioner Wepretso Mero and SP Imlisunep, when reached, chose not to comment on the situation. The Parliamentary Secretary was not available for comments. State govt appeals MEANWHILE, the State Government has regretted the ‘unfortunate’ accident and has appealed to the public to maintain calm. The Chief Minister, who had departed for New Delhi after the Longleng programme, in a telephonic statement through press secretary Abu Metha said the accident was very unfortunate, but appealed to the people to remain calm and resolve matters in a peaceful manner. It was also informed that all possible measures would be taken by the government with regard to the treatment of the injured. Based on doctors’ reports all further necessary steps will be taken for the patients’ welfare and, if required, they will be airlifted out for treatment, it was stated. The Chief Minister has also expressed grief over the death of one person and extended deep condolences to the bereaved family. ![]() |
