ImageKOHIMA, JUN 16: In a disturbing revelation, Home Minister Imkong L Imchen informed that the unprecedented rise in extortion and escalation in prices is due to the presence of 10 Non-Naga insurgent outfits operating in and around Dimapur. Addressing media persons at the Civil Secretariat in the state capital, Imchen said that besides the business community, they are extorting money from government employees in connivance with the Naga insurgent groups like NSCN-IM, NSCN-K and FGN, which he said is tarnishing on the image of the Naga national workers. Altogether 141 cadres from different insurgent outfits of the neighboring states have been arrested till date this year. Naming the 10 non-Naga insurgent groups present in and around Dimapur, the Home Minister also gave a rough estimate of the cadre strength of some quoting intelligence inputs. The 10 organizations operating in Dimapur are namely DHD Nunisa group - 60 cadres; DHD-J (Black Widow) – 10 cadres; Kuki Revolutionary Army (KRA) – 22; People’s Liberation Army (PLF) – 10; United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) – 10; Gorkha Liberation Army (GLA), People’s United Liberation Front (PULF), All Adivasi National Liberation Army (AANLA), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB)and United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).

Extortion has reached an intolerable limit, the Home Minister acknowledged and expressed hope the society would lend the government a hand in order to arrest and eliminate the specter of extortion. Agreeing that rampant extortion is affecting each and everyone’s life, the Home Minister informed that the State is bringing up a special commando force from different stations to deal with the special situation this year onwards and 2 companies of Police would be drawn from all except the IRB as per MHA directive to all states, as a deterrent. State Government is sparing no efforts to apprehend the UG cadres and booking them under the NSA, Imchen claimed. Cadres of factions which are in official agreement with the GoI are treated as political prisoners while the others are booked as criminals. He mentioned that search and flush out operations are being conducted to contain the growing menace of taxation which is everybody’s concern. Imchen asserted that Nagaland Police and security forces have been putting their best efforts in apprehending the UGs involved in extortions but they still flourish as most are from other neighboring states. On this note, he appealed to the Governments of the neighboring states as well as the Centre to extend cooperation to bring culprits to book.
