Eastern Mirror Dimapur, Dec 19: A mass social work conducted this morning by the citizens of Lake View Colony to clear the clogged drains, roads and the surroundings for the festive season turned into a sort of frustrated assembly against the indifferent attitude of the government to maintain a proper road leading to their colony. The road in question, which has reportedly been neglected for almost 12 years, leads to the Old Naga Cemetery, FCI godown, Assisi School and Living Word Centre. Speaking to this reporter, GB of the colony said the patience of the citizens have run out over the indifference of the government towards fixing the road into a motorable one. “We have submitted numerous representations and appeals for repair of the road and now what’s left is initiation of citizen measures,” he stated. “This stretch of road has been ignored for more than ten years and the condition is so pathetic, uneven and dusty that auto drivers and especially Rickshaw wallahs literally cringe to set their vehicle into the territory,” another senior citizen lamented. And for the sole reason of the potholed and rough conditions of the road, reluctant cabs and rickshaw drivers charge extra amount, they further stated. Around 100 trucks ply through the road to the FCI godown for loading and unloading of rice and other commodities every day and students, especially young children, are exposed to the hazards of the polluted dusty stretch during winter and a muddy commuting during summer. “We are really upset over this and if no actions are taken immediately, we will be forced to initiate an indefinite road blockade of vehicles on this road,” the GB informed, adding that even vehicles carrying dead bodies to the cemetery for burial would not be allowed to enter. However, in respect of public sentiments and the dead, the colony citizens will assist in carrying the coffins to the cemetery, he went on to add. Earlier, on Wednesday, a meeting among the senior citizens and the youth was held to discuss on the issues concerning the road problem and a fact finding committee constituted to ascertain the veracity of the numerous assurances by authorities for repair of the road and the reasons why it still remain unfulfilled. The citizens of the colony plan to hand over a representation to the DC Dimapur shortly within a day or two after a final meeting in this connection. |
