NU sacks Controller of Examination |

Kohima, Sept 5 (NPN): Nagaland University which had been perennially embroiled with various allegations of corruption and financial irregularities finally bowed to pressure by sacking the Controller of Examination who was linked with a recent scam.
The Executive Council, the apex governing body of the university decided to serve the suspension order on the Controller of Examination Mr. Tongpang with immediate effect on August 31 last. The Executive Council’s decision reportedly came following the intervention of the Visitor, who is the President of India.The Visitor had reportedly directed the University to immediately initiate action against the erring official indicted in the Rs.33 lakh scam.
It was learnt that the tainted officer was alleged to be directly involved in siphoning of Rs.33 lakh meant for purchase of furniture sometimes way back in late 90s when he was posted as OSD Lumami Campus. The university had earlier constituted an Inquiry Committee to probe into the scam and the committee in its report, had reportedly indicted Tongpang and recommended the University initiate necessary action against him.
However, the University authority continued to ignore the Inquiry Committee’s report and failed to initiate action against the erring officer. The Visitor of the NU who is the President of India, intervened after receiving complaint from the NUTA. The Visitor issued strong directive to the university’s VC to initiate action against the erring officer, it was learnt. Interestingly, successive Vice Chancellors of the NU including the present VC Prof. K. Kannan were accused of sheltering erring officials of the university involved in various irregularities including the Rs.33 lakh scam. Moreover, it was alleged that the university authority had attempted to write off the scam through the Finance Committee. However, this was strongly objected to by the officials from the union ministry who were present in the committee meeting.
