CBI team in State to probe into NU |

KOHIMA, SEPT 7 (EMN): A CBI team from Kolkata comprising top officials arrived in the state capital today to probe into the charges of corruption and financial anomalies in the Nagaland University.
Some officials, on condition of anonymity, opined that the CBI was propelled into action after an RTI was filed in the CBI Directorate last month, as the complainants have been kept in the dark on the progress of the CBI investigation into the NU case.
Talking to this correspondent, Nagaland University Teachers Association (NUTA) President, Rosemary Dzüvichu said that the visiting team is yet to meet NUTA. She however hoped for a free, fair and impartial enquiry by the CBI and stressed that the Teachers’ Association would ensure that there are no compromises.
Stating that NU belongs to the people and accountability in the system is their right, she said that NUTA would see to it that the enquiry on the behest of the Visitor, the President of India, Pratibha Patil would slowly but surely bring justice.
Meanwhile the Executive Council, the apex governing body of the university, has placed Controller of Examinations, NU, Tongpang Ao under suspension and his vehicle has been seized. Sources said that the action was long due as the Visitor had written in January for immediate action and divesting of authority. Sources further claimed that despite the directive, the VC was protecting the Controller of Examinations and former Registrar and even attempted to write off the amount siphoned off in the Finance Committee meeting in February last but was unsuccessful in the face of opposition.
Sources revealed that the CBI team has been deputed by the President of India and would be conducting investigation into various anomalies in NU, including charges of misuse of University fund by top NU authorities including the Vice Chancellor Prof. K. Kannan, former Registrar Thejao Vihienuo and Controller of Examination Tongpang Ao.
