Dimapur,Dec 6(MExN) : As mobile use continues to grow, more and more youngsters look to it not only for sending and receiving information but also as a form of entertainment. There is no denying the fact that cell phones have become an indispensable tool predominantly among the younger generation and students. But when its misuse surpasses the utility, they bear out to be a danger particularly to students.
When it comes to studies, cell phones are proving to be a nuisance as it affecting the student’s academic performance. Mobile phones have become an obstruction in the course of learning as the mind gets distracted when it rings. Educational institutions are places where parents send their children to acquire knowledge but many students indulge in undesirable practices, utterly forgetting their responsibility. Playing mobile games underneath their desks, sending SMS, chatting, clicking obscene photographs, are all prevalent in almost all schools and colleges. Mobile phones are a necessary evil as far as students are concerned.
Many are of the view that the main reason of the students’ poor performance in academics is primarily because of mobile misuse. Parents can go to confirm their child’s academic performance in schools/colleges and see what response they will get from the school authorities in regard to their children’s poor performance. That cell phones should be totally banned in schools is a widespread topic for discussion at present.
The misuse of the mobile phone is also quite evident with numerous calls and messages from anonymous persons. With lots of facilities being provided by various companies, students are caught up in the promotions. Exchange of abusive and vulgar messages has also become the order of the day. Many students lag in their studies and when we analyse the root cause, the use of mobile will be one of the major reasons.
If we take into consideration the current state of affairs and evaluate the circumstances keeping in mind the quality of education, then we can simply come to a conclusion that it is not at all necessary for students to carry a mobile phone to their institutions. It is also viewed that the best way out is for schools to take up a course of action that will be acceptable to the parents as well as the school administration. Parents can ensure that they have the school’s telephone number rather than purchasing mobile phones for their children and paying huge bills.
Let us also contemplate on how many of these mobile users particularly the students use the same to talk to their parents since most of the parents give the phones to their children to keep in touch with them. Basing on the prevalent misuse of mobile phones by students, schools should impose a total ban on students carrying mobile phones to schools, while also ensuring that teachers avoid using them in classrooms.
While not claiming that the mobile phone should not be given to youngsters, it will be wise to ensure that it should, at least, be disallowed in classrooms or schools, as the school is a place for learning and not for chatting or indulging in unacceptable behaviour with the mobile. Students need to be taught the consequences of misuse.
Every school can have a clear policy on the use of mobile phones on its premises. With suitable implementation and usage of landlines in the school campuses, any urgent situation can be faced competently. Once this menace is cast out from the school atmosphere, the education system just might return to its ideal path.
