Airtel launches Blackberry services in Nagaland |

Kohima,Dec 7 (MExN): Airtel today launched its Blackberry services and data card on pre-paid in Nagaland. Announcing this at a press conference here at Hotel Japfü, Sanjeev Mishra said that Blackberry services will feature instant email mobile. Airtel, in the last four and a half years of its operation in the north eastern region, has gained over 35 lakh mobile customers. In Nagaland, Airtel has reached out to the remotest areas like Mon, Mokokchung, Phek, Zunheboto, Wokha, and Kiphire and has covered all 11 districts in Nagaland with a network close to 164 sites.
With a market share of 32% and 35% of population covered in Nagaland, Airtel has provided telecommunication network and improved the economic development of the region. 2000 families have directly or indirectly benefited from Airtel in terms of employment.
Airtel is not only serving customers in Nagaland by providing a superior telecommunication network, but is closely associated with the Naga people in promoting their culture. It has been promoting local talent in the north eastern region and also supporting efforts to showcase the North East and its tourism potential through association with events like the Autumn Festival in Meghalaya and the Hornbill Festival in Nagaland.
On earlier occasions, Airtel promoted music in the region by bringing international bands like MLTR, Scorpions and Firehouse and also promoted local talent through Airtel Rock North East Contest. For the second year in succession, it has sponsored the first prize of Rs.5 lakhs for the winner of the Hornbill National Rock Contest 2009.
It may be recalled that Bharti Airtel has been always in the forefront of promoting activities relating to arts, culture, literature, music and sports in the region in a big way every since its entry into the North East in April 2005.
In Nagaland, Airtel has earlier sponsored a state-level football team and has promoted local talent through supporting fashion shows at which Airtel customers’ participation has also been seen. Recently on Children’s Day, for the second consecutive year, Airtel conducted drawing competitions across the North East for children on the theme of environment – ‘Clean North East, Green North East’ – where 3000 children from over 600 schools participated. The third prize was awarded to Deesha, Class IV from GMS Hakchang, Nagaland.
The winning works will be featured in a calendar and greeting cards of Airtel. Mishra was appreciative of the Hornbill Festival which, he said, was growing in the right direction. He said that intention of sponsoring the first prize for the ‘Airtel presents Hornbill National Rock Contest 2009’ was to support bands to go towards greater heights and at the same time to promote local talents. Gugs Chishi, project director of the Music Task Force, and Anjuli Chittaranjan, head of internal and corporate communications & CSR NESA, Bharti Airtel Limited, were also present at the press conference.
