Kohima | December 20 : N Panger Jamir, Director, Employment & Craftsmen Training, has asserted that one of the serious problems among the educated youth is abhorrence to manual works. “In this regard, many of the educated people think that manual work is not their job; but let us not forget that we are all the children of manual workers from the time of our forefathers,” Jamir said at the just concluded silver jubilee celebration of the Educated Unemployed Union Nagaland (EUUN) in Kohima.
The Director also stated that there is no question of being ashamed of doing manual works because whatever developments and achievements and progress are made, are through manual workers only. “If there is no manual worker, nothing can progress in this world. Had our people understood that manual work is also a part of employment, many would have been employed. But unfortunately, when we look around, all the manual works are done by the non-locals only. Then where is our youth force? Are they not fit to do manual work?” he questioned.
The main reason, Jamir said, is that they are ashamed to do manual works thinking that people would look down upon them. This is rather very foolish, he added. The Director said that it is now time to involve our youth in doing manual works whether in the public or private sector, adding, “Unless our youth are encouraged to do so, many of them will remain unemployed.”
For instance, he cited, in both public and private sectors huge building constructions are going on everywhere. But all the workers are non-locals only. They are earning and supporting their families because they are willing to work; whereas many Naga youths remain idle doing nothing and just expecting government jobs. Therefore, he said, people coming from other states are getting plenty of works to do whereas our people are not getting the work. “It is sad to note that all the manual works in our society are done by the non-locals only, including domestic works; but how long shall we depend on non-locals to do our works?” he said.
In view of this, the Director for Employment & Craftsmen Training felt that it is high time that our educated youth should think very seriously about the issue and should be ready to do any kind of job for their livelihood and not depend on parents or others. “One of the very sorry affairs is that many of our educated people are depending on parents even after getting married with their wife and children.” How long will such practice go in this modern world, he asked.
In the meantime, Jamir suggested, the EUUN can set up a Labour Center in the district headquarters where the educated unemployed, particularly skilled labourers, can register their names and whenever any employer require their service, it can be channelised through such centre.
