Nagaland govt seeks report on IRB rampage PDF Print E-mail
Dimapur, December 28 (MExN): The state government today said to have sought a detailed and official report on the December 23 rampage of a unit of IR (NAP) jawans at a West Bengal railway station. The report has yet to be received and the state police administration is waiting for it, police officials said today. Earlier, IRB jawans returning from poll duty in Jharkhand was reported to have damaged railway property and also assaulted staffers of New Jalpaiguri railway Station in West Bengal. Home Minister Imkong Imchen informed tonight that an official report has yet to be received before any action can be initiated against the erring IR jawans. Also, PRO for Nagaland Police, DIG LL Doungel said a detailed report on the incident has been sought from the IR unit. Only after the official report has been received, would disciplinary proceedings be initiated, it was informed.

Police officials implied that disciplinary action at this juncture cannot be, as a complete report on what actually happened at the New Jalpaiguri Railway Station on December 23 has yet to be received. It was informed that the Nagaland Police Headquarter has sought a complete report from the Commanding Officer of the IR unit involved in the incident. The unit is said to be the 13th Indian Reserve (NAP). The commanding officer of the unit, RP Kikon could not be reached for comment.

There was also confusion over the report having reached the Nagaland Police. A local daily had reported that a number of the IR personnel were suspended following the incident. However, refutation by the police on the stated disciplinary action confirmed that the IR higher-ups have yet to submit an official report. On the night of December 23 reports were received that a group of drunken constables from the Nagaland IR went on a rampage at New Jalpaiguri station, breaking window panes and assaulting railway staffers with rifle stocks. 12 railway employees were reported injured. The policemen were reported to be apparently venting their anger at the railway authorities for delaying a replacement of the engine of the train that was taking them from Ranchi to Dharmanagar in Tripura. The jawans were returning from poll duty in Jharkhand. The policemen further damaged furniture and broke the windowpanes of the station manager’s office, it was reported.
