Price hike of bakery products illegal: DMC PDF Print E-mail
Dimapur, Jan 12 (MExN): The Dimapur Municipal Council today made clear that any affect, revision, hike or “fixation” in prices of commodities made without the council, is illegal. The council today reacted to the statement made by “Dimapur Bakery Association” in regard to upward revision of prices of all bakery products with effect from January 18. ‘The Rate Control department of the Dimapur Municipal Council would like to clarify to all in concern that fixation or revision of price of any commodity under the jurisdiction of Dimapur Municipal Council has to go through the DMC as the municipal council is the competent authority empowered by the Municipal Act,’ it was stated. The notice was issued by price-control councilors Ningkhoun Gonmei and S Vihuto Yeptho.

The DMC made clear that any organization or business community having problems with existing price rates should first approach the Dimapur Municipal Council, for redress. After monitoring the situation, the DMC would take necessary action whether to revise the price or not, the council reminded. “Any organization or individual cannot just decide on their own to enhance the price and the DMC will not accept the same and will treat the decision as illegal,” the DMC said. The DMC may also be informed here that in the previous two days, many shops in Dimapur have started selling the tobacco quid, Paan, at Rs. 5 per quid (even for normal staples like 120 and 350). In fact even this evening, customers were paying Rs. 10 for two quid of 120 paan (or ‘Ek so bis’). The shops say that the price of betel nuts and leaves has been increased by wholesalers. Despite attempts to find out the reason, none could be ascribed for the dramatic rise in “paan” price. The DMC had earlier stipulated certain rates for ‘paan.’
