Dimapur Police nab UG extortionists |

DIMAPUR, JAN 20 (EMN): 3 members of the NNC/FGN have been arrested by Dimapur Police on charges of illegal collection of taxes from vehicles.
The modus operandi adopted by the miscreants was to seize ignition keys from drivers to coerce them to bring the stipulated tax for release of the key.
Police arrested one SS Lt Asheto Sema (aged 25) from Burma Camp on January 12 after laying trap on receipt of information that a JCB was being held on tax ransom.
Dimapur police said Asheto Sema, who reportedly appeared in a two wheeler halted the JCB at Burma Camp junction and questioned the three occupants-driver, handy man and operator whether they had paid yearly tax of FGN. When replied in the negative, the accused reportedly seized the key of the vehicle and asked them to pay up the amount for release of the vehicle key. Contact number was also furnished to the driver.
Police arrested Asheto Sema and following the lead extracted from his confession, two other NNC/FGN members identified as SS Seargent Nevechi Chakhesang (aged 28) and SS Lt Khatoi Assumi (aged 30) were arrested on January 15 after the police raided their camping place at Sunrise colony, Burma Camp.
One country made 9mm pistol along with three live rounds, one magazine, two shoulder flaps, four truck keys, FGN constitution booklet, tax coupons, writing pad along with a number of incriminating documents were recovered during the raid.
According to the Police, all the three affirmed that they were serving under one Brigadier identified as Tokugha Zhimomi, who is reportedly a member of Joint Working Group of the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR). Till the filing of this report, police said the Brigadier was absconding.
In another extortion case, one Atoho Sema (aged 24), resident of Diphupar (A) was arrested by West Police on January 19 noon for reportedly trying to extort money from a shop at Circular road, opposite FCI office.
The police also seized coupons belonging to the Ministry of Chaplee Affairs, GPRN/NSCN from the possession of the accused. Police said the accused had served a demand note of around Rs 6000 to the shop saying that he would return the next day to collect the amount.
On receipt of information, the police had dispatched a Special Operation Team (SPO) the following day, leading to the arrest of the accused.
In another major breakthrough, Dimapur Police (West) arrested one Akash Das alias Akash Yadav hailing from Lanka, Sagar Nagar District, Assam and wanted for a number of money loot cases in Dimapur.
The accused fooled his victims inside banks by strewing money on the ground to divert their attention and taking off with their money, either meant to be deposited or withdrawn.
The accused was nabbed by police on duty with the help of citizens between Vijaya Bank and Police Assistance Booth (PAB) on January 14 when he reportedly tired to use the same trick with a staff of the Oriental Theological Seminary (OTS) who came to Vijaya Bank to withdraw cash of around 4 lakhs.
The accused, along with 3 accomplices, is stated to be involved in the December 31, 2009 case of looting of Rs 2, 30,000 from one victim at Vijaya Bank. Further interrogation also revealed that the accused was also involved in the snatching of Rs 5 lakhs from another victim at Axis Bank on November 20.
OC West Police said efforts are being made to nab the other members of the gang who are still at large by networking with the Assam Police.
