Kohima, Feb 5 ((MExN) : Thailand is offering scholarship for a Naga student in Rajaphat Surintra University in Surin Province of Thailand for a 2 year Masters Degree course in Arts, education or social science. Additional Chief Secretary & Development Commissioner Alemtemshi Jamir said today that the Government of Thailand is giving a full time scholar sponsorship for a 2-year Masters Degree course for one Naga student in Surin, Thailand.
This was announced at a press conference here today, addressed by Thailand Ambassador to India Krit Kraichitti. The ambassador addressed media persons at Hotel Japfü in Kohima today just before his departure to Dimapur. Admiring the hospitality of the Nagas and recollecting his stay in Nagaland, the ambassador said that the state possesses a vast potential for tourism. However, he said, connectivity has to be improved. Kraichitti said that apart from fauna and flora, the state also has rich cultural and traditional values. These values have similarity with Thailand’s and they can be another important factor in attracting tourists, he said.
The Thai ambassador said Nagaland is one of the most wonderful and exciting parts in North East India and has vast potential for tourism. He said that apart from the natural beauty, the state also has rich cultural and traditional values which can be another important factor for attracting tourists. He said that the main objective of his maiden visit to Nagaland was to promote Indo–Thai relations particularly in the North East regions and also the convergence of the ‘Look East’ policy of India and ‘Look West’ policy of Thailand. This was besides establishing people-to-people contact.
Kraichitti stressed on the need to work together to improve trade, investment, tourism and cultural ties between India and Thailand, particularly with the north eastern states. The ambassador believed that India and South East Asian countries have a lot of potential to promoting trade and culture. He also called for collective efforts to preserve natural resources and environment. He proposed a road link between different South East Asian countries including India which can help improve trade, particularly between India and Thailand.
The ambassador also mentioned about his visit to Governor Nikhil Kumar and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on February 4. He said that in their brief meeting they talked about improving ties between Thailand and Nagaland in the field of trade, investment, tourism and culture. The ambassador stressed on relations between Thailand and Nagaland in trade and commerce.
He was impressed that goods from Thailand have found their way into the Nagaland market and said that if products from Thailand can reach Nagaland and North East, then products from Nagaland can also reach Thailand in the same way.
Also present at the press conference Tharadol Thongruang, counselor of Thai Embassy, Delhi said he found that Naga people are more hospitable than Thai people. “They are very good, kind,” he said and termed the visit as a wonderful trip. He also said that proper tourism management has to work out, adding a time has come to work together to promote tourism in Nagaland.
The ambassador visited the Naga Heritage Village, Kisama and later the Kohima War cemetery before his departure to Dimapur. Also, Commissioner & Secretary for Tourism KK Sema said that the department has begun to take serious views of what can be done to promote tourism in the state. One positive sign was the participation of not only tourists but also different cultural troupes that have participated during the Hornbill Festival in the past few years.
