Dimapur, February 6 (MExN): Setting a new standard for all Nagas to follow, the Chakhesang Students Union of Patkai Christian College, on its 25th anniversary resolved not to accept any monetary gifts from “chief guests” henceforth in any of their programmes. Similarly, the union will not felicitate the guests with any gifts. This resolution was appreciated by all the dignitaries present at the function, especially Kuzholuzo Nienu, the Minister for Health and Family Welfare, who was present there as “chief guest.”
Nienu, who on many occasions has urged people not to “shower VIPs with gifts,” appreciated the CSU of Patkai Christian College for taking the decision. He said “Chakhesangs are moving ahead…this is an exemplary session.” Nienu said if people are to change the world, it has to start with the individual. He pointed out the system of giving expensive gifts to “chief guests” have become deeply rooted at the grass root level and there is an urgent need to stop it. “Custom of gifts encourages corruption,” the Minister said. Neinu said functions are for promoting the community/organization and not to “make up” for the expenditures incurred.
Encouraging the union on its success of attaining 25 years, Neinu said the need of the hour for Chakhesang’s to attain quality education. He urged student to take up challenges and make a great name for the community and Nagas as a whole. “Labour hard for a few years and you will reap the benefits for the rest of your life,” he encouraged. Neinu urged students not to be lured by the worldly pleasures of life and stick to their books.
Other speakers on the occasion included OSD Finance department Vesielie Kezo, Coordinator Entrepreneurs’ Associates Neichute Doulo and former President of SUPCC Kuzoto Lohe, all alumni of Patkai Christian College. The union anniversary souvenir was released by Kuhupoyo Puro, member Nagaland Public Service Commission who is also an alumnus of the college.
