Rs 2419 lakh per annum for bogus, absentee teachers PDF Print E-mail
DIMAPUR, MAR 1 (EMN): The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the State Vigilance Commission constituted to probe into the false and irregular appointments of teachers in the School Education Department has unearthed as many as 1156 bogus teachers and 1096 cases of appointments made under doubtful circumstances. As many as 1084 teaches were physically unavailable for verification. The SIT was set up by the State Government in March 2009. The verification period initially was from 2007 to 2009 but was further expanded up to 2010. The SIT finally submitted its report on February 26, 2010. Chief Secretary Lalthara informed that the Government would be setting up a Committee of senior officers under the chairmanship of Mhathung Kithan, Commissioner and Secretary, School Education, to look into the report within a week, and to put up to the Cabinet the course of punitive, remedial and preventive measures needed to be taken by the Government.

The chief secretary also informed that the SIT is still unable to submit final and conclusive reports of its investigations in certain areas, particularly under the jurisdictions of DIS Dimapur, Niuland and Longleng, due to lack of adequate cooperation from the Government employees working under these establishments, and also due to interference from outside elements. “The investigations in these areas, as well as other areas, will continue to be operative till satisfactory results are obtained,” he stated. According to the SIT report, annually the salary drawn by the 2240 teachers comes to a whopping Rs 2419 lakhs. The calculation is based on the conservative estimate of the total emoluments @ Rs 9000 average pay per month drawn by a newly appointed teacher. Lalthara expressed optimism that the report will enable the Government to take punitive, corrective and preventive measures to cleanse the department of the malaise. He appealed to all citizens, NGOs and civil societies to give their moral support as well as positive help in whatever way they can. He also placed on record the Government’s appreciation to the SIT for its painstaking efforts in investigating the case successfully inspite of the many difficulties and trying circumstances under which the investigation had to be carried out.
