DIMAPUR, MAR 10 (EMN): Eight traders dealing in poultry related products and fish items at New Market were booked and their commodities seized on Wednesday morning by a combined team of police and Special Branch personnel for violating the prices fixed by the rate committee of the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC). The arrest came following surprise visit made by the Deputy Commissioner Dimapur Maongwati Aier and DMC CEO Nikhashe to New Market and Super Market to take stock of prices of perishable items on March 9 last.

The defaulters have been booked under Consumers Act, police said. Meanwhile, following up on measures to check prices of construction materials, especially bricks which have been experiencing sharp increase, the DC after a close door meeting with the Brick Kiln Owners Association (BKOA) on Wednesday said the prices of bricks have been rolled back to Rs 3.60 per piece for ‘A’ class and Rs 3 per piece for ‘B’ class. Blaming the sharp increase on the handiwork of certain hardware store dealers along Naharbari and NH 39, the DC told Eastern Mirror over phone that selling of bricks by hardware store dealers along NH 39 would be restricted. Prices of bricks have not shot up in the brick kilns, however, the hardware store dealers after procuring bricks from the kiln have inflated prices bricks and taken consumers for a ride, the DC opined. The Brick Kiln Owners Association in the meeting with the DC agreed to put an end to selling of bricks by hardware stores and in open outlets in the kiln. Prices of bricks were on the rise since 2009 year end and touched Rs 5 to Rs 6 per piece at present.
