Morung Express Dimapur | December 26: Five people were seriously injured in a series of road accidents that took place in and around Dimapur on the evening and the night of December 24 last. According to the traffic control room of Dimapur, an auto-rickshaw hit two pedestrians in the town area while three persons on a motorcycle suffered serious injuries in an accident that took place at 2˝ mile. Police also recovered a dead body at the National Highway, near Sugar Mill, suspected to have been a case of ‘hit and run’. However, the police added, investigation was on to ascertain the cause of death. The major cause of the accidents was driving under the influence of liquor, police said. In a brief interaction with The Morung Express, the OC of the Traffic Control, Dimapur, A Zeliang, said that alcohol, talking on the mobile while driving, and rash driving are the main factors for most of the road accidents in Dimapur. He also said that people should follow the instruction of the traffic personnel so as to avoid traffic congestion, and minor and major accidents adding that “the safety of the people is our concern.” Admitting that most of the people do not possess a driving licence and valid documents, the OC said people should not drive without these and added that underage youth should avoid driving vehicles. Referring to the growing number of underage drivers in Dimapur, the OC commented that parents should not allow their children to drive vehicles and maintained that the family can also play a big role in avoiding driving under the influence of liquor. Also expressing concern for the safety of bike riders, he said the riders as well as those riding pillion should wear helmets and shoes. Enunciating on the careless parking practices of the people of Dimapur, Zeliang lamented that people had no parking sense and continued that many lacked civic sense despite their rank and qualifications. “We want safety,” he concluded. It may be mentioned that the Traffic Control Dimapur has put up various awareness signboards in all major traffic islands, but how effective they are remains to be seen. With the arrival of the New Year and December 31, the worry remains. |
