Naga leaders declared ‘Wanted’ |

IMPHAL, JUN 7: Manipur police today declared the leaders of frontal Naga organisations as ‘Wanted’ persons with cash awards of Rs 1 lakh each on their heads in connection with the imposition of indefinite economic blockade on the Manipur sector of the two National Highways 39 and 53.
DGP Manipur Y Joykumar Singh, in a press release, said All Naga Students Association Manipur (ANSAM) president David Choro and United Naga Council (UNC) Manipur president Samson Remei have been declared ‘Wanted’ by the Manipur police whereby Rs 1 lakh would be awarded to anyone providing information leading to their arrest.
The day’s announcement comes three days after a division bench of the Gauhati High Court Imphal bench asked the Manipur DGP to produce ANSAM president David Choro on or before June 16 after hearing a petition filed by one RK Joysana who reportedly contended that resorting to highway blockades in pursuit of some demands from the government is illegal.
UNC and ANSAM functionaries could not be contacted for their reactions over the notification of the state police.
Meanwhile, even as leaders of the Manipur People’s Party launched a hunger strike today against the state’s failure to solve the current deadlock, the Naga Leaders Forum, Manipur, has reportedly appealed to all concerned to desist from further destruction of public and private properties and to keep ‘our sensibilities’ in check to tackle every issue in a democratic approach. The Forum’s statement signed by three sitting MLAs, including the president of the Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (I) Gaikhangam, Tribal development minister DD Thaisii, MLA Khangthuanang Pammei, former MLAs RK Theko, A Aza, AS Arthur, Francis Ngajokpa, D Korungthang, social workers L Benjamin, PA Theko, R Keishing, former MLA candidate AS Shimreiyo said the present situation has polarised and led to the hardening of stands further dividing the people into different groups.
