DIMAPUR, JUL 5(EMN): The nationwide opposition ‘Bharat Bandh’ on Monday partially disrupted normal life in parts of the State.
In Dimapur, the directives of the district administration, the DMC and the DCC for normal functioning of government offices, institutions and business establishments went unheeded.
Even without a single MLA in the State legislature, the bandh was surprisingly a total success in the commercial town as almost all commercial establishments chose to keep shutters down while plying of vehicles was also limited though there was not much of a restriction.
Most of the educational institutions also remained shut and a number of government offices ran empty as most staff failed to turn up owing to lack of transportation and other factors.
However, in nearby Chumukedima, the bandh did not get any response and it was business as usual.
Early on Monday morning, BJP party workers complied with the appeal of the district administration and the police to relax their restriction on vehicular movement.
The State BJP unit, briefing the media, said the bandh was successful in Mon and Dimapur and partially successful in the districts of Mokokchung, Wokha and Kohima. Citing communication gap, M Chuba Ao, state president, said situation in Tuensang could not be ascertained.
In Dimapur, except for some stray incidents including the arrest of the youth president of the state BJP unit by police, the bandh passed off peacefully. The youth president was released by the police after an hour, the BJP president added.
The BJP state unit voiced gratitude to the public, school institutions and businesses for their cooperation. It also extended gratefulness to the NPF for giving moral support to the bandh which it hailed as a ‘good gesture’ and a show of concern about the price hike.
BJP State president also took the occasion to criticise the Congress party at the centre over what it termed as a ‘democratic party having no tolerance.’ Drawing comparison over the prices of commodities with that of neighbouring Bangladesh and Pakistan, Jamir said even though the two nations are economically poorer than India, the price of petroleum and its allied products are cheaper there.
The party also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the district administrations and police department for extending their cooperation in the maintenance of law and order during the bandh.
