Objection over ‘Naga commission’ tax PDF Print E-mail
DIMAPUR, JUL 21 (EMN): The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce (DCC) and its subsidiaries have reacted strongly to the order issued by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) permitting Naga Council Dimapur to collect tax as ‘Naga Commission’ on certain items coming to Dimapur. A press release issued by Dimapur Chamber of Commerce through its president Kasheto Yeptho said the permit order, reportedly signed by the ADC Dimapur, allowed Naga Council to collect tax on building materials, timbers, perishable goods including food items such as vegetables and fruits, animal, birds, fish etc till December 2010. Objecting strongly to the order and terming it as totally unacceptable, the DCC and its subsidiaries today appealed to the district administration to cancel the order within 3 days, failing which, they said, hardware dealers and perishable goods dealers would resort to indefinite shutdown of its business in the form of first phase of agitation.

In the second phase, the entire business community of Dimapur would resort to indefinite shutdown of business, the release has cautioned. In the light of this new proposed tax, the DCC also reminded that Dimapur is already infested with various taxations which directly or indirectly have been a cause of recent price hike in Dimapur. It rued that due to this rampant taxation, even goods transport vehicles have become reluctant to enter Dimapur. The Chamber maintained that, at this juncture, it will not tolerate or entertain taxation leverage to any NGO, because automatically it is the public who will suffer at the end. “We have no objection to NGOs coming for donation and are ready to offer any form of assistance, but except the DMC, we will not allow them to tax us,’ the DCC stated. Moreover, it once again appealed to the administration and police to remove all illegal tax collection at gates within a period of one week and not give permission for such illegal collection of tax in future. It has also requested the general public to cooperate with the business community of Dimapur and voice out against such illegal taxation.
