More police to tackle crimes in Dmu: DGP PDF Print E-mail
Dimapur, Nov 17 (NPN): Not only shopkeepers and business firms that have to face rampant extortion and forcible donations, even the ordinary person in the street is not very safe in Dimapur. This was further amplified on Wednesday when a mother was robbed off cash and jewelries while riding in an auto to pick up her son from school. Two miscreants, jumped inside the auto rickshaw she was traveling in then one of them brandished a pistol then robbed her of gold necklace, earring and bracelets including cash. The incident is one among too many in Dimapur where miscreants force themselves into any auto already carrying a passenger then commit robbery. Close on the heels of Tuesday’s protest closure by jewelry shop owners against armed miscreants extorting money in the name of underground outfits and also committing daylight robbery, state DG Police K.Kire told this Reporter over telephone that additional police forces would be deployed in Dimapur to check various crimes.

Kire also did not rule out involvement of criminal elements coming from outside Nagaland pointing to recent arrests of militants from Manipur and Assam. The DGP also said the SP Dimapur was also in touch with counterparts at Golaghat and Diphu to monitor activities of such elements. He said while more police personnel would be deployed in Dimapur, the public should also provide timely information to police to check extortion and other criminal activities. Kire also felt that public must repose trust on the police and not be afraid to come out with information. When contacted over phone, SP Dimapur Zekotso Mero disclosed that a specific strategy would be adopted by Dimapur police to tackle various crimes. Mero also disclosed that request for additional manpower would be sought from the PHQ in order to check criminals and anti-social elements. He also reiterated his earlier stand seeking cooperation of the public to provide timely information to police. On Tuesday’s meeting of jewelry shop owners who have resorted to a two-day protest closure against extortion, robbery and assault, Mero maintained that no information was given to the police. He said if no information was forthcoming, it was not possible for police to act promptly against criminals and anti-social elements.

Dimapur Jewelry Shops owners, in a meeting called by G.S Road Business Association Tuesday, decided to close their establishments for two days in protest against rampant extortions by unidentified miscreants during the past week. The G.S Road Business Association yesterday had appealed to the DC and SP Dimapur to provide adequate security as rampant extortion was taking place especially on businessmen and traders of Dimapur. It may be mentioned that more than Rs. 64,500 in cash and valuables worth around Rs. 69,970 were extorted from jewelry shops at various locations of Dimapur during the past week.
