DIMAPUR, DEC 28: Nagaland could develop by making the most of the rich bio-diversity through the use of horticulture, herbal and aromatic plantation, putting together agro-processing units and also by injecting the use of technology in the popular handicrafts, said APJ Abdul Kalam responding to a query posed by a student during the interactive session at Delhi Public School (DPS) on Sunday. The former president was also of the view that with great teachers to guide young minds the state could play a vital role in educating the rest of the country on protection and conservation of environment while pointing to the pristine beauty Nagaland has managed to preserve. Also allaying the apprehensions of the young children on possibilities of global warming leading to submersion of the planet, he assured that planet earth was far from been submerged. He, however, said that there was pressing need to develop alternative fuel to decrease pollution. “I am confident the world would have the much needed alternative fuel in place in the next five years,” he said.

Clearly hinting at the persisting conflict situation in the state, the former president in his message to the students laid emphasis on the need for every citizen to have a ‘righteous heart’ to enjoy peace and harmony and beauty of character. Terming Nagaland as a ‘land of beauty’, Kalam said if righteousness was in the heart of every citizen, harmony, peace and order would automatically fall in line superseding the conflicts. “What matters in this life, is extending help to others,” he said while particularly pointing out that giving help does not necessarily involve monetary aid. Students can give by teaching other children how to read and write, he said.

Shifting gears, the former president also impressed that youth of the country has a role to play to restore harmony. “What we need is leadership with compassion to give voice to the millions of voiceless people world over,” he asserted. Acknowledging the presence of hundreds of students despite it being a Sunday, Kalam referred to the theme of the 16th National Children’s Science Congress (NCSC) and urged the young minds to advocate for a clean planet and learn to enjoy the success of other people. The former president departed back for New Delhi after his face to face interaction with the students.
